LEADERSHIP IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY
What happens when the world around me collapses? How can we navigate through problems and continue with our projects when the situation is unstable? These and other questions haunt us when our world breaks down and there is only chaos. This hostile situation, also known as VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain Complex, and Ambiguous), tends to paralyze us and prevents us from clearly seeing the future.
In this course, students will explore the characteristics of the VUCA environment and learn about the abilities and skills necessary to neutralize them. We will revise the strategies proposed by Bob Johansen to counteract chaos and start focusing on the future, learn about the skills and competences of the new leader in times of uncertainty. The first step is to focus on yourself.
Throughout the course, students will complete different exercises that will lead them in a journey of self-exploration. To facilitate this process, students will read about different theories and leadership styles. They will define their vision, identify their objectives, and break them down into specific actions that will allow them to start the path of success. Then, they will bring everything together into a Plan of Action thinking on the timeline and resources that they need to complete the tasks. Finally, they will develop a process of continuous evaluation of the items to determine what actions should be dropped off the original plan, which ones will stay and how and when to pivot if necessary.
The structure of the class is defined in three different modules:
Online Sessions: It is a two-week program where students cover the content of the course online through synchronous daily class meeting with the professor and classmates in real time. Students will do individual as well as collaborative work on specific topics and projects.
Bridge Sessions: Students will come together twice a month to continue working in their collaborative projects. Classes will also include specific advising sessions, workshops, roundtables and activities with guest speakers and business professionals.
Onsite immersion session: As a conclusion of the program students will participate in a two-week immersion program in Madrid, Spain. This capstone experience will allow participants to enjoy a full direct learning, visiting all cultural and historical sites subject of study as well as meeting all partners, experts and guest that participated in the previous part of the program.
Teaching methodology combines classroom sessions on streaming and virtual site visits with the use of other of digital technologies, including filming, photography, virtual and augmented reality reproduction, or web and app, design among others so students can enjoy the best experience from home.
