Course Description
The concept of what is a Museum has evolved, and so has its function and relationship with society. The has been a long way from the classic museums of the eighteenth century created for a distant contemplation of the artwork by a restricted social elite, to the current intention of today´s museums fostering openness, democratization, active learning and participation.
There is no doubt that these goals and challenges are very different from those of the early times and thus, transformation applies not only to the physical space but also the to the creative programs and exhibits that they offer. Throughout the course students will study the process of transition and adaptation to the current demands paying specific attention to the case of Spanish Museums. We will revise the case of Spanish national museums, minor museums and collections, museums of art and technology, the role of foundations and private exhibitions or the new concept of "Open Museum" or Museum on the Web.
As part of the course, students will participate in the creation of a digital/virtual collaborative project related to one of the museums, exhibit or collections studied during the course.
