SPANISH CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION: Arts, Culture & Technology

MADRID SPAIN

Description

This course will examine the history and culture of Spain from the Middle Ages to the Golden Age through a thematic design. Students will study literary, artistic, and cultural context through the critical reading of literary and historical sources, but also art, music, inventions, film, photography, or architecture, among other sources to understand the different cultural manifestations from the early history of Spain. We will revise the multicultural Middle Ages, the birth of Early Modern Europe, the political, religious and social conflicts of that time;   the building of the Early Spanish Empire (Europe & America), and the artistic and literary world of the Golden Age.

Students will learn to critically analyze all sources including texts, objects, pictures, geographical spaces, architecture, music, film, or art, all of them the testimony of the shaping of the Spanish history of the time. They will learn to draw connections between cultural and artistic manifestations and cultural and historical contexts that we are studying in class. As part of the course, students will participate in the creation of a digital/virtual project related to the historical events, cultural or political characters, literary texts, artistic or cultural manifestations, or about the life in the cities at the time of the study.
