Program Description
This course will offer an interdisciplinary approach to the history, peoples, and cultures of Spain from the 18th Century until today. Students will learn to integrate different sources, texts, and testimonies, including literary and historical texts, art, music, film, and architecture, among others. This eclectic approach will allow them to learn to critically analyze different sources and voices, all of which are evidence of the shaping of Spanish identity and spirit over time.
The course analyzes the history, society, and culture of Spanish from an interdisciplinary perspective. We will explore the dramatic transition to the Bourbons Dynasty in the early 1700 and the cultural and political changes that came along with them. We will explore the process of modernizing the country; the new industries and laws, and social and political unrest depicted by Goya´s paintings. We will frame the revision of the 20th Century in the study of Republican Spain, the civil war, post-war and democratic transition.
To end the course, we will focus on the future of Spain in the 21st Century and its role in the international context.
