THE MAGIC & THE DUENDE
Flamenco is a magical world that has been shaped over the centuries as a melting pot of cultures from all around the world. The Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca described the “duende” as the magical moment of inspiration that opens the doors of colorful perceptions “driving us to the sublime.” These emotions are the starting point for our passion for the culture of flamenco, theatre and dance.
During this course students will explore the world of exotic creativity travelling culturally, in time and space, through the intricate relationship between the Spanish culture and the flamenco expression that gave birth to the iconic theme of “the magic and the duende”.
Students will be introduced to the field of artistic expression as means of communication of personal ideas and emotions through the arts including music, dance, acting, voice, rhythm, image and movement. We will work as a team learning the different sides of the theatrical process with the aim of developing a performance piece, which will be shown to the public at the end of the course.
The course will include different cultural activities that will illustrate how flamenco is (and has always been present) in the Spanish cultural life. Students also, attend a show of performance arts and flamenco and will have the opportunity to meet professionals who work in different areas of theatre from the artistic to the production and technical sides.
All students registered in this program have the option of taking an additional Spanish language class.
